Music, theatre, outdoor fun, & culinary events – it must be FROSTival time!

Fredericton’s greatest winter celebration, FROSTival (January 16 – February 2) is sure to deliver memories made for winter. Plan a fun weekend with friends, take in some great live music in intimate venues with the Shivering Songs Music Festival, try your hand at a hands-on learning workshop, enjoy amazing food at over 25 special Dine Around Freddy locations, build snow art with the kids, lose yourself in theatre, sing along to the music, or cuddle up next to a cozy campfire. With over 150 events, FROSTival delivers something for everyone!

FROSTival’s first weekend brings a combination of indoor and outdoor fun!  Take a walk around the downtown to spot the great ice sculptures, enjoy an outdoor skating party in Officers’ Square, take in some great events at Crabbe Mountain and be dazzled by the evening sky as it lights your way for “Stars and Snowshoes”!  Bring it inside and do some yoga or catch phenomenal live dance performances at the Fredericton Playhouse!

Dine Around Freddy celebrates local culinary culture with the biggest participation to date: over 25 restaurants! Enjoy mouthwatering masterpieces created just for you, January 16 – February 2.  Savour the flavours of Fredericton with a delectable three course meal for only $31! You select your meal items from a specially designed menu, customized just the way you want it. Visit the Dine Around Freddy website to view participating restaurant menus and plan your special night out.

FROSTival shines the spotlight on live performances. The Fredericton Playhouse comes to life with dance from the Tentacle Tribe, the annual NB Country Showcase and swoon to the crooning sounds of 4 piece group, Dreamboats. Take in some live community theatre such as Broadway classic, “Jesus Christ Superstar” from Collective Theatrics;  Theatre UNB’s “The 39 Steps” and TNB’s “Boys, Girls and other Mythical Creatures” and “It’s a Girl” as well as Branch Out Productions “Murder on the Orient Express”.

FROSTival would not be complete without the Shivering Songs Music Festival (January 29-February 2)! This popular festival brings together internationally renowned artists in unique historic spaces around Fredericton! Expect music by Matt Andersen, Motherhood, Les Hay Babies and more! 

Experience a night of live competitive painting with Art Battle (January 25) at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre; you can even bid to take your favourite piece home with you! The following week, spend time visiting local art galleries by taking part in the Downtown Gallery Hop (January 31).

Be a participant and unleash your inner artist! FROSTival features many hands-on learning opportunities hosted by edVentures NBCCD (basketry, spoon carving), UNB Leisure Learning, East Coast Art Party and Cricket Cove Knitting Workshop. At the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, try your hand at watercolours. Pre-registration for all workshops is required, so register soon!

FROSTival means embracing the outdoors! Hit the slopes of Crabbe Mountain for family nights, the Everest Challenge, Speed Week and Demo Day.  Bundle up for a wintery sleigh ride, head out to Mactaquac for Winter Wellderness (January 25), bring your yoga mat to SnoGa (this year, January 26 AND February 2!), head to Officers’ Square for an Old Fashioned Skating Party (January 18 & February 1), then sing along at an evening campfire. Participate or be a spectator for the annual Wostawea Maritime Cup (January 18 & 19). New this year, and in commemoration of the March of the 104th Regiment, “March of the 104th Celebration – Group Tent Race” happens on January 25. Come be part of the celebration and cheer on teams from the Regiment and Cadets Corps

Prefer warmer activities?  Visit one of our amazing markets! Check out the goodies at the Cultural Market, Northside Market, and Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market or purchase some local artwork with a new event this year, “Queen’s Pop Up Market”(January 18, 25 and February 1) and don’t forget the Night Market at Picaroons Roundhouse (January 16, 23 & 30). Perfect your poker face at the Fox-UCT Poker Championships (January 25), and experiment for yourself at Science East’s Adult Science Night: Science East After Dark! (January 31) or get physical and learn something new at the Sweat Club.  Are you into something a little more adventurous? How about participating or being a spectator at a rock climbing competition (January 25)!

That’s the spirit! Whisky nosing and tasting with Frank Scott at the Lunar Rogue (February 2) is always popular with whisky enthusiasts.  How’s this for a combo: Bowling, Burgers & Beer at the newly designed “Drome” on January 18. Spend some quality time with the little ones at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery! Here they can unleash their little inner artist with “Art for Frosti-Tots” (January 17, 24 & 31), take in a movie with the FredKid Frosty Movie (January 18), and have some fun at the courts with the Family Tennis Extravaganza (February 2).  Sports, sports, sports! Cheer on your favourites at the Capital City Rollers’ Winter Wonder Slam Invitational (February 1), and don’t miss a minute of university sports including hockey, basketball, and volleyball action with UNB and STU Athletics and Maritime Junior A Hockey with the Fredericton Red Wings.
