Live Music Abounds thru FROSTival!

The live music experience is front & center in Fredericton’s FROSTival 2018 schedule!

Are you worried January and February hold no fun? Expecting only cold dark winter days after the holiday season has passed? I’m here to calm your fears! Fredericton’s FROSTival provides lots to get excited about.

FROSTival runs over three weekends (Jan 18-Feb 4) and features 100+ events focused on celebrating winter in Fredericton with the region’s best outdoor events and indoor cultural experiences. Of course since my passion lies in the live music experience, I want to draw your attention to the numerous and diverse shows being presented.

Shivering Songs
Kicking everything off is the much anticipated Shivering Songs Festival celebrating songwriting and storytelling in downtown Fredericton January 18th to 21st. This year’s lineup is already amazing and there are still announcements to come so stay tuned. To give you an idea of the varied and stellar shows being presented I’ll touch on just a few of the Saturday night shows below. Be sure to look at the full schedule on their website to ensure you don’t miss out on the great shows being offered in various venues.

David Myles is a much loved Frederictonian coming home (with a full band!) to share his latest release Real Love.  This, David’s 10th album, is described as an absorbing rejuvenation of rock ’n’ roll’s dramatic power—it will make you dance, weep, and never forget where you were the first time you felt it. Definitely gives me a sense that I must be at the Boyce Farmers Market on Saturday, Jan 20th to enjoy this for myself. Tickets / Details

Also performing on Saturday, Jan 20th is Timber Timbre at Charlotte St Arts Centre. This Canadian group (featuring Taylor Kirk, Simon Trottier and Mathieu Charbonneau) recently released their 4th album Sincerely, Future Pollution. Said of this album - “Be it the freedom of recording abroad (France), or the revelation of these unexplored instruments, Timber Timbre found a release from artistic constriction and created its most daring work yet.” Tickets / Details

The curators of the Shivering Songs festival and Fredericton favourites The Olympic Symphonium recorded their latest album,  Beauty In The Tension, last winter and we can look forward to hearing what they produced during their six day retreat in NS. Catch them in the beautiful Wilmot United Church on Saturday night, Jan 20th. Tickets/ Details

Other FROSTival music events!

Outside of the festival there are many more fabulous shows taking place during FROSTival. Here are a few you’ll want to check out for yourself:

Friday, January 19 Juno award winners Matt Mayes and July Talk are joining forces to co-headline a show at the Currie Centre (UNB).  Together, with special guests, they bring together the best rock Canada has to offer and this is sure to be one heck of a party! Wear your dancing shoes and be ready to get your groove on. Tickets / Details

Matt Mays at Fredericton FROSTival

On Tuesday, Jan 23rd the Canadian rock icons, Big Wreck, will be in town celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album In Loving Memory Of… by performing it in its entirety. Featuring three top 10 singles - “The Oaf (My Luck is Wasted)”, “Blown Wide Open” and “That Song” - the album was certified double platinum. There will no doubt be lots of nostalgia surrounding this show and surely there won’t be anybody able to sit still. Tickets / Details

Basia Bulat returns to Fredericton on Saturday, February 3 playing at the Fredericton Playhouse. With an electrifying voice and memorable lyrics, Basia is a rising star on Canada’s folk-pop music scene. She has been nominated for a Juno and shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and she is great at winning over crowds with just an autoharp, her stomping feet and two mighty lungs. FROSTival - Campfire Series

So there you have just some of the live music events taking place during FROSTival. I assure you these shows will warm your hearts as you make your way through another Canadian winter. May I also suggest you give the gift of music this year? People don’t often need more ‘stuff’ but they will never forget a live music experience! If you live outside of Fredericton I strongly urge you to make your hotel reservations now because this will give you something to look forward to after the holiday season has come and gone.

I invite you to drop us a note to let us know which show(s) you are most looking forward to. And make sure to keep checking the FROSTival calendar as more events continue to be added!
